Rapper Mystikal Pleads Not Guilty To Rape Charge: Case Facts To Know
Rapper Mystikal pleaded not guilty to charges of first-degree rape and second-degree kidnapping Monday, in relation to an incident from 2016 in which he was charged with raping a woman.
Born Michael Tyler, the New Orleans-based rapper waived an arraignment in Caddo District Court and his next court date was given as Jan. 18. The hearing could include a motion to reduce his $3 million bond, the Caddo district attorney's office said, according to CBS affiliate KSLA.
The alleged rape took place at a Louisiana casino
Shreveport Times reported Mystikal was charged in the incident that allegedly happened Oct. 22, 2016, in Shreveport, the same night the rapper’s Legends of Southern Hip-Hop Tour concert took place in the city. He allegedly raped a woman in the casino and an investigation by Shreveport Police Sex Crimes after gathering the victim's statement, witness testimony and DNA evidence said the "Shake Ya Ass" rapper was linked to the scene, NBC Affiliate KTAL-TV reported.
Mystikal is suspected to have two other accomplices
According to Billboard, police in Shreveport, Louisiana, issued an arrest warrant for Mystikal and a man named Averweone Holman. He was arrested and charged with first-degree rape. Mystikal, who surrendered to the police Aug. 21, was being held in Caddo Correctional Centre.
Another woman, by the name of Tenichia Wafford, was also taken into police custody and charged with obstruction of justice. According to TMZ, police stated she tried to strong-arm the alleged victim into dropping charges against Mystikal and the other man.
TMZ said Tenichia admitted to calling the woman only because they were friends, and said that was when the victim allegedly told Tenichia she was not raped.
It was not clear at the time if Tenichia said the alleged victim stated the sexual contact was consensual or if there was no sexual contact at all. Holman and Wafford are both also being held at Caddo Correctional Center.
Mystikal was convicted before of sexual battery
The rapper was sentenced to six years in prison in 2004 after being convicted of sexual battery. Rolling Stone reported he was charged in 2002 with forcing his former hair stylist to perform oral sex on him and two bodyguards at his apartment in Baton Rouge after he accused her of stealing money from him. The woman denied the charge levied by Mystikal, the Rolling Stone said.
A videotape of the incident later surfaced and Mystikal and his bodyguards, Leland "Pokie" Ellis and Vercy "V" Carter, pleaded guilty to sexual battery as part of a deal that allowed them to escape charges of aggravated rape, which carried a mandatory life sentence. Ellis received a three-year prison sentence, Carter drew four years. Mystikal served six years in prison and was released on Jan. 14, 2010.
In February 2012, Mystikal was arrested again following a dispute with his domestic partner and was later given a misdemeanor charge of domestic abuse battery. He was detained for nine days and then released on bail. He also faced charges involving tax evasion.
