Real Madrid could reportedly have an upper hand in the race to sign Alexander Isak, who has flourished for Sweden in the ongoing Euros 2020.
Los Blancos have contacted the representatives of Isak, who is also being chased by other top European clubs including Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool, reported Spanish media outlet Diario AS. Isak, who is contracted with Real Sociedad until 2024, has been labeled with an asking price of around $84 million.
Considering Chelsea and Real Madrid are known for splurging money in transfer markets, beating either side, in this case, could be a task for Arsenal and Liverpool.
The Real Sociedad forward, who had already drawn attention from these clubs through his standout performances in La Liga, has continued to impress fans with his recent performances in the Euros 2020. After pushing Spain to the edge in their tournament opener, he was awarded the Player of the Match in Sweden’s 1-0 win over Slovakia. In their latest outing against Poland, he made an assist as Sweden sealed the game 3-2 to secure the top spot in Group E.
Real Madrid are the latest club to show interest in signing the 21-year-old Swedish marksman. If the La Liga giants speed up their efforts, they could edge out their rivals because Isak is represented by the Universal Sports Group agency, which also works with Real Madrid star Luka Modric. In fact, successful negotiation with the agency saw Real Madrid extending Modric’s contract by a year recently.
Real Sociedad tried to increase Isak’s fee before the Euros 2020 began earlier this month, but the Spanish side failed to do so, according to soccer website Teamtalk. The Swedish playmaker netted 17 goals and provided two assists in as many as 34 matches in La Liga last season, which led to him winning the Young Player of the Season award to boot.
Meanwhile, during Belgian forward Romelu Lukaku’s question and answer session with his fans on Twitter, he was asked about Isak. To which, the Inter Milan star replied, "Future is bright for him."
The former Manchester United forward, Lukaku, who one of the best strikers in the world, has netted three goals so far in the Euros 2020.
