Real Madrid In The NBA? President Reveals Talks To Join Eastern Conference
Real Madrid maybe known across the world for their accomplishments in soccer but the Real Madrid basketball team is by far the most successful division of the Real Madrid CF multi sports club that also encompasses women’s soccer teams and youth soccer and basketball teams. There is no team that can match their dominance in Europe and club president Florentino Perez now wants a new challenge.
The Madrid club’s president explained that most of their current opposition is too weak and they play too many insignificant games throughout the season. He is open to the team playing fewer games but with better opponents and revealed that they have spoken about starting a European League.
Perez’s dream, however, is to see Madrid basketball club play in the NBA where they can challenge the best teams and players in the world. He revealed that he has spoken about allowing Madrid to be part of the Eastern Conference but admits that it is a dream that is not close to becoming a reality.
"In basketball we play many insignificant games. It's better to play less, but better. We have explored the option of a European League and I have the dream of seeing Madrid in the NBA,” Perez said, as quoted on the London Evening Standard. "I have asked us to be included in the Eastern Conference, but they say that's far away."
Madrid Basketball club have won 35 Spanish League championships and the EuroLeague a record 10 times while also claiming the Triple Crown on three occasions. Perez now wants improved opposition and is open to starting a European Conference which will allow them to play teams from Turkey and Greece on a regular basis.
"The other teams in Spain don't have as much interest, but there are Greek and Turkish clubs with which we could have a European Conference," he said.
"There are only two teams in the NBA with more followers than us on social networks,” Perez added.
