Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo broke the single-season scoring record in the Spanish Premiership in an 8-1 rout of relegated Almeria at the Santiago Bernabeu while Emmanuel Adebayor struck a hat-trick.
It took Ronaldo less than five minutes to break record previously held jointly by Hugo Sanchez (1989-90 season) and the legendary Athletic Bilbao striker Telmo Zarra (1959-60) and get his 39th league goal of the season. He scored a second late in the game to take his tally to a magnificent 53 goals in all competitions this season.
Adebayor gave himself a better chance of turning his current loan move to Madrid permanent by scoring a hat trick. Karim Benzema scored a brace while young substitute Joselu scored his debut goal to complete the scoring. Uche scored Almeria's only goal.
