A self-proclaimed 'fartrepreneur' who made $200,000 from farting in jars has announced she’s bringing down the shutters on her grand gassy business. Despite making over $50,000 a week from selling farts, the reality TV star decided to retire early after a recent medical emergency.
Steph Matto, 31, from Connecticut, gained widespread attention after making shocking claims last December on YouTube about selling farts to strangers. Each jar would fetch her $1,000, according to Ladbible. However, the success of her business proved to be short-lived after she wound up in A&E with symptoms that she feared were caused by a heart attack.
“I thought I was having a stroke and that these were my final moments. I was overdoing it,” Matto said.
Several tests and an electrocardiogram later, the "90 Day Fiancé" TV star was informed that the shooting pains in her chest were caused by excessive gas. Doctors told her the excess gas was caused by her diet, loaded with beans and eggs that would be washed down with banana protein shakes.
“I remember within one day I had about three protein shakes and a huge bowl of black bean soup,” Matto said as she recalled the events that led to her hospital visit.
"I could tell that something was not right that evening when I was lying in bed and I could feel a pressure in my stomach moving upward," Matto continued. "It was quite hard to breathe and every time I tried to breathe in I'd feel a pinching sensation around my heart."
The reality TV star further revealed that a friend had to drive her to the hospital.
"It was made clear that what I was experiencing wasn't a stroke or heart attack but very intense gas pains," she added. "I was advised to change my diet and to take a gas suppressant medication, which has effectively ended my business."
Matto had tweaked and adjusted her diet to optimize her body’s capacity to produce gas. And, to make her farts smell worse, she threw banana protein shakes into her diet mix. Her diet played a huge role in the grand scheme of squeezing out up to 50 jars worth of fars in a single week.
Apart from appearing on the show "90 Day Fiancé," Matto also started her own YouTube channel, wrote books, and founded an X-rated subscription site called Unfiltrd, according to the New York Post. The real game-changer came about when she received requests on Unfiltrd to sell her farts in jars.
"Once I put the jars up for sale they began to sell like hotcakes," Matto said. "I honestly could not believe the demand."
Speaking about the mixed reaction her olfactory business had received, she said, "I have a lot of people praising me, calling me a girl boss, telling me that I inspire them to be unashamed of who they are and what they do. But on the other end I have been getting a ton of negativity."
