The Reason Kate Middleton Wasn’t Friends With Prince Harry’s Ex Chelsy Davy
Before Prince Harry married Meghan Markle, he was in a committed relationship with Chelsy Davy. Harry and Chelsy dated on and off from 2004 to 2010 until they split for good.
During that time, Prince William was also dating Kate Middleton, who was still adjusting to the royal spotlight. Kate allegedly tried to form a bond with Chelsy, but the socialite wasn’t interested in making another friend.
In the 2008 book, “Kate: The Future Queen,” Katie Nicholl discussed Kate’s failed attempt to make Chelsy her ally during royal events. When the two were invited to Peter Phillip and Autumn Kelly's wedding in 2008, Kate realized they were too different to become friends.
“Harry and Chelsy, who were back together after a romantic reunion in Botswana, had been invited, and Kate was grateful, for she didn’t know many of the guests,” the royal biographer wrote.
“Her friendship with Chelsy was lukewarm; they were completely different characters and the bubbly Zimbabwean got along better with Pippa,” she added.
Although it seemed like the woman had a few things in common, Chelsy kept her distance from the future Duchess of Cambridge. “Kate had made an effort to befriend Chelsy, inviting her clothes shopping, but Chelsy had turned the offer down, leading to a coolness between them,” Nicholl revealed.
However, their icy relationship began to thaw when the two were scheduled to meet Queen Elizabeth at the wedding. “Kate and Chelsy finally had something in common to bond over, their shared nervousness about meeting the Queen for the first time,” the royal expert wrote.
“Kate’s nerves were amplified because she was attending the wedding alone, on Will's behalf, since he had other commitments and couldn’t attend. On this occasion, however, they bonded, because they were both nervous about meeting the Queen,” Nicholl shared.
Despite her frequent trips to the royal palaces, the wedding marked Kate’s first formal introduction with Queen Elizabeth. “Understandably, without William by her side, she was shy and later recalled, ‘It was amongst a lot of other guests and she was very friendly.’”
After Prince Harry and Chelsy split, the Duke of Cambridge went on to date Cressida Bonas before settling down with Meghan. The couple is now parents to baby Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor.
