When it was time for Prince Charles and Princess Diana to divorce, the Prince of Wales reportedly had no intention of letting his soon to be ex-wife keep a certain perk that comes with being a member of the royal family.

Charles and Diana, who shared sons Prince William and Prince Harry, legally ended their marriage in 1996. However, before the divorce was finalized, the Princess was pressured to give up a few things she wasn’t ready to let go of.

In Diana’s 1995 BBC interview with Martin Bashir, the Princess revealed she never intended on getting a divorce and insisted the decision was forced on her. Along with losing a husband, Charles also insisted that Diana be stripped of the HRH (Her Royal Highness) title.

While Queen Elizabeth II was reportedly fine with Princess Diana keeping her title seeing as she was the mother of the future king, Charles demanded his soon to be ex-wife lost the HRH in front of her name.

According to Mirror UK, the loss of her title meant Diana, Princess of Wales would have to curtsey to just about every royal no matter how low they were in the monarchy. It also meant Diana lost any future claim to the crown, which is believed to have been Charles’ way of humiliating her in front of the world.

Princess Diana, who was reportedly furious over losing her title, was said to have burst into tears when Prince William attempted to comfort her. “Don’t worry Mummy, I will give it back to you one day when I am King,” Diana’s butler Paul Burrell recalled.

However, William never got the chance, Diana died in a car crash on Aug. 31, 1997 in Paris.
