'Rebel Galaxy' Free On The Epic Games Store For A Limited Time

Action-packed space RPG “Rebel Galaxy” is currently free on the Epic Games Store as part of the service’s regular free games giveaway. The game succeeds “A Plague Tale: Innocence” as the store’s free game offer from last week.

“Rebel Galaxy” is a singleplayer open world RPG set in the fringes of the known universe. As an open-ended game, players are free to pursue whichever path they want; play as a notorious space pirate that preys on trade routes or become an asteroid miner and turn in rare ores for lucrative profits. The game is littered with dozens of NPCs that provide jobs, exposition dumps and other forms of meaningful interactions as well.

Combat lies at the heart of “Rebel Galaxy” and players can expect to do plenty of fighting in-game. Unlike other space-based dogfighting games like “Star Wars Squadrons,” “Rebel Galaxy’s” space combat locks players in a 2D plane, which means that player-controlled ships can only move laterally. However, what the game lacks in freedom of movement is compensated for by the sheer spectacle of each engagement.

Space battles in “Rebel Galaxy” often lead to explosive conclusions. Players will often find themselves fending off all manners of ships, from agile fighters to heavily-armed corvettes and dreadnoughts. Ship weapons can be manually aimed and fired or they can be left at the hands of AI crewmates who will shoot hostiles at will.

The constant barrage of lasers, heavy cannons and other weaponry gives “Rebel Galaxy’s” space fights a cinematic feel, even with the 2D flight and combat controls. Bombarding enemies with a broadside cannon salvo from a frigate is something that not many games offer, yet “Rebel Galaxy” manages to make it immensely fun and satisfying.

Players can choose from a wide selection of ships and arm them with an even bigger catalogue of devastating weaponry, from shield-breaking energy weapons to hull-busting torpedoes, flak cannons and assault guns. There are plenty of playstyle options that can cater to each player’s preference, and those who find themselves bored with their arsenal can simply swap to a another one to get a completely different and refreshing experience.
