  • Rebel Wilson says she used to eat 3,000 calories most days
  • The "Pitch Perfect" star consumes more protein in her new diet
  • Wilson admits she still eats burgers and fries on cheat days but only half of the amount she used to consume

"Pitch Perfect" star Rebel Wilson is opening up about the changes she made to her diet when she decided to focus on her health this year.

Wilson earlier revealed that she has already lost 40 pounds in her weight loss journey. This was apparently thanks to consuming more protein and fewer carbohydrates.

"Before I was probably eating 3,000 calories most days, and because they were normally carbs, I would still be hungry," Wilson told People.

"So, I've really changed to eating a high-protein diet, which is challenging because I didn't use to eat a lot of meat," the 40-year-old Australian actress continued. "I eat fish, salmon, and chicken breast."

Wilson also admitted that she has cheat days. While she follows a high-protein diet most days, she sometimes gives in to her cravings and indulges in burgers and fries, but she makes sure to limit her consumption.

"It doesn't mean every week is a healthy week. Some weeks are just write offs, and there’s nothing you can do about that," she shared.

"I'm just trying to go for overall balance, overall healthy balance," she added. "I have this state of being, which is not my quote, but I go 'Nothing is forbidden.' We’ll be like, 'Should we get In-N-Out burger?' And I'm like, 'Nothing is forbidden.' I can go there, I just might eat half of what I used to eat before. You know? And I'll have a burger, and a few fries, and then you feel fine."

While many people gained weight during the lockdowns, Wilson used the change in routine to work on herself, de-stress and rest, explaining that most of her stress had been work-related. The lockdowns also gave her time to work on her mindset, especially regarding her relationship with food.

"I definitely think with the slow down, it did help," the actress said.

"I think I was emotional eating, and overeating at times because I wasn't loving myself enough either. And it does come down to that self-worth and self-love,” she added.

During a recent appearance on "The Drew Barrymore Show," Wilson also spoke about working on the mental side of things and how she failed to value herself.

She admitted that she was an emotional eater and had a sweet tooth. But her successful weight loss journey made her feel happier and more in control of every aspect of her life.

"I feel more in control and I get to produce movies now, which is amazing, and kind of have more control of the content," she said. "I just feel like everything seems to be coming together, maybe I’m a late bloomer or something, but I’m slowly getting it together."
