Red Wings sign free agent goalie Nabokov
Nabokov, 35, was released by St Petersburg of the Russian Kontinental Hockey League in December after winning eight games in 22 starts.
The Kazakhstan native was originally drafted by the San Jose Sharks in 1994 but did not make his NHL debut until 2000, playing 563 games over 10 seasons, winning 293 while recording a goals-against average of 2.39 and a save percentage of 0.912.
In the playoffs, Nabokov had improved individual statistics and won 40 of 80 games.
Nabokov won the Calder Trophy as the NHL rookie of the year in 2001 and in international competition he backstopped Russia to a gold medal in the 2008 World Championship.
He was released by the Sharks last June.
