KEY POINTS
- "Wild" was based on author Cheryl Strayed's 2012 memoir
- Reese Witherspoon will be next seen in "Legally Blonde 3"
- The actress will also give voiceover in the animated movie, "Sing 2"
Actress Reese Witherspoon's portrayal of Cheryl Strayed in the 2014 movie "Wild" gained her a lot of adoration and an Oscar nomination. However, playing the character was anything but easy, as Witherspoon revealed during an interview Tuesday.
Speaking with actress Tracee Ellis Ross for Interview Magazine, the 45-year-old reflected on the role that changed her the most, and revealed she was "so scared" to act in "Wild."
"I had hypnosis, I was so scared. I was having panic attacks for three weeks before I started. There was the nudity, sexuality and drug-use aspect, but also being alone on camera with no other actors," she explained.
"I hadn’t ever been alone in scenes for days and days," Witherspoon added. "There were probably 25 days of the shoot where I had no other actor opposite me. It was just me and a camera and a backpack. I was like, 'Is this going to be so boring?'"
The Jean-Marc Vallée directorial is based on 2012's "Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail" memoir by author Strayed.
The movie revolves around Strayed's personal tragedies, including the loss of her mother and the dissolution of marriage. Strayed had hiked 1,100 miles alone through the Pacific Crest Trail to recover mentally.
The actress further spoke about Strayed’s book and said it was "so beautiful and sacred to me because it spoke to me so deeply about how we as women have to save ourselves. There’s no mother or father coming to save us. There’s no spouse. I thought it was radical that at the end of the film, she ends up with no family, no money, no job, no partner, and she’s happy."
Strayed and Nick Hornby penned the two-hour drama adventure. The actress further admitted she might not work "that hard again," but it was the role that changed her on a "cellular level."
Witherspoon will give voiceover in animated musical comedy, "Sing 2," which is slated to release on Dec. 22, this year. The actress will be next seen in "Legally Blonde 3" and "Where the Crawdads Sing," both the movies are slated to release in 2022.
