Reign
"Reign" premieres on the CW on Thursday, Oct. 17 at 9 p.m. CW

Is the CW about to get a little risqué? The network’s new drama, “Reign,” is making headlines for its premiere before the episode even airs … and the content will definitely leave you blushing.

The CW generally doesn’t push boundaries when it comes to provocative content, yet the initial pilot for its 16th-century-based show had something more suitable for the likes of FX or HBO – a “steamy masturbation scene.”

According to Entertainment Weekly, the first cut of “Reign” that was sent to advertisers and the media featured a sequence along the lines of this:

Mary the Queen of Scots (Adelaide Kane) and her teenage ladies-in-waiting attend a wedding in France and sneak off to spy on the “bedding ceremony” of the newlyweds. The “bedding ceremony” consists of the bride and groom having sex before a group of elders “who are present to ensure the marriage is consummated.”

But that’s not what left “Reign” viewers shocked.

The ladies-in-waiting become aroused by the bedding ceremony and look for privacy to “find relief.” One of the handmaidens, Kenna (Caitlin Stasey), goes into a secluded stairwell where she reportedly lifts up her dress to masturbate. She’s interrupted by the King of France (Alan van Sprang) who “offers his assistance and takes over.”

The CW cut the masturbation scene … for the most part. The story line will still be there, and Kenna will still get some action from the King of France. However EW reports that instead of having a clear knowledge of what she was doing, unknowing viewers will instead be left wondering, “was she doing what I think she was doing?”

The pilot episode of “Reign” will introduce viewers to Mary Stuart (Kane), who arrives in France to get engaged to Prince Francis and secure Scotland’s alliance with the country. However it’s not an easy arrangement – especially when Francis’ half-brother Bash (Torrance Coombs) joins the picture, and when Francis’ mother, Queen Catherine (Megan Follows), “learns of a prophecy that marriage to Mary will cost Francis his life.” The episode will find Queen Catherine determined to protect her son … “no matter how many others have to pay with their lives.”

The series premiere of “Reign” will follow “The Vampire Diaries,” airing on Thursday, Oct. 17 at 9 p.m. The new show has already received an order for three additional scripts.
