Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-GA, urged a top White House aide to convince former President Donald Trump to call for a “marshall law” in the wake of the riot at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

In a text message Greene sent to then-chief of staff Mark Meadows, the Georgia Republican suggested that imposing a “marshall law” would keep Trump in office. The message was sent on Jan. 17, 2021, just three days before Trump was set to leave the White House. It was not immediately clear whether Meadows responded to Greene.

"In our private chat with only Members, several are saying the only way to save our Republic is for Trump to call for Marshall (sic) law. I don't know on those things. I just wanted you to tell him. They stole this election. We all know. They will destroy our country next. Please tell him to declassify as much as possible so we can go after Biden and anyone else!" the text message read, CNN reported Monday.

The reference to “Marshall law” was a misspelling of martial law. When martial law is in effect, the military takes the place of the civilian government. Under martial law, civil liberties can be suspended, including free movement, free speech and protection from unreasonable searches.

The text message came nearly two weeks after a crowd of pro-Trump supporters broke through police lines and stormed the U.S. Capitol building while lawmakers in Congress were confirming Joe Biden’s electoral victory. The riot led to the death of five people, including a Capitol police officer.

Rep. Greene, who is known for allegedly holding extremist, racist and antidemocratic political views, has previously promoted a litany of voter fraud allegations and conspiracy theories, such as QAnon.

Earlier this month, Greene announced that she filed a complaint with the Capitol Police after late-night host Jimmy Kimmel made a joke about the lawmaker’s opposition to Supreme Court nominee Ketanji Brown Jackson who she called “pro-pedophile.”

“Marjorie Taylor Greene, this Klan mom, is especially upset with the three Republican Senators who said they’ll vote ‘yes’ on Judge Kentanji Brown Jackson, who’s nominated for the Supreme Court. She tweeted, ‘Murkowski, Collins, and Romney are pro-pedophile. They just voted for #KBJ,’” Kimmel said. “Where is Will Smith when you need him?”

In her complaint, Greene said the joke was a “threat of violence.” It is unclear whether Capitol Police would pursue an investigation into the matter.

In 2018, the lawmaker took to Facebook to claim that the deadly California wildfires were caused by lasers controlled by Jewish people who teamed up with PG&E and the state government to start the fires.

“If they are beaming the suns energy back to Earth, I’m sure they wouldn’t ever miss a transmitter receiving station right??!!” she wrote on a now-deleted post, which was preserved by Media Matters.
