Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's first foray into livestreaming has proven to be a resounding success.
After tweeting that she was looking for people to play “Among Us" with on Twitch, several popular streamers expressed their interest in joining the representative for the 14th district of New York. The result was some pretty impressive streaming numbers.
A peak of close to 440,000 viewers tuned in to watch Ocasio-Cortez play the video game, making it the third-largest audience for a Twitch livestream. Joining the stream were popular streamers Pokimane, HasanAbi, Jacksepticeye, Moist and Dr Lupo.
When Ocasio-Cortez tweeted about wanting to livestream the game, she said it was to get people’s attention and get them to vote in the Nov. 3 election.
During the livestream, she kicked things off by once again reminding people to vote and engaged in friendly banter with the other streamers. Joining the event was Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, who posted a photo of her own setup on Twitter.
Ocasio-Cortez revealed last year that she was a fan of “League of Legends,” even earning the rank of Silver IV in the competitive strategy game that pits two teams of five against each other.
“Among Us” is a different kind of game though. It has 4-10 players attempting to prepare their spaceship for departure. Players take on the roles of Crewmates, who are prepping the ship, or Imposters, who are trying to eliminate the Crewmates and sabotage the launch.
Despite being released in 2018, “Among Us” did not gain a big following until July when streamers like Sodapoppin, xQc, Shroud and Ninja began streaming it.
The record for most concurrent views in a Twitch livestream was set in 2018 when Drake joined Ninja in a game of “Fortnite.” There were 600,000 concurrent views for that stream.
