iPhone 5 fever is picking up as we inch closer to the Mobile World Congress in Spain in February where many new smartphones are set to debut, including the Samsung Galaxy S3. That's because nothing in the consumer tech world generates as much buzz as new Apple iPads or iPhones.

Samsung's Galaxy S3 should make some significant improvements over the Galaxy S2, but the difference will mostly be on the inside as a radical physical redesign is unlikely. In fact, there has been speculation that one particular device seen in a Samsung promotional video during the Consumer Electronics Show was the Galaxy S3.

Acer debuted the Iconia Tab A510 at the International Consumer Electronics Show in January, and the 10-inch device is of the quad-core system variety, but it should debut for a few dollars less than the iPad 3.

Amazon's Kindle Fire tablet has shown tablet makers the way to beat the iPad is to make sure your device is less than half the price of the tablet king. If the price is no more than $300 and it runs at least a recent version of the Android system, buyers might be inclined to go for it.

Motrola's Wi-Fi Xoom tablets began getting the new Android 4.0 update Jan. 18, and that brings the total number of tablets running the new system to a whopping two. Xoom wasn't the first tablet to get the software update, and that had been a minor mystery because Xoom was basically a Google tablet. Asus' Transformer Prime was the first tablet to get the update, and now that the Xoom is getting its chance, we'd venture a guess the Samsung Galaxy Tab line of tablets is next.

Web sites connected to SOPA were attacked and temporarily knocked offline. Notorious hacker collective Anonymous took credit for the attacks that included Whitehouse.gov, the DOJ Web site, and Web sites for the U.S. Copyright Office and Recording Industry Association of America. Anonymous claimed to have hacked the government sites in retalliation for the Megaupload sites, and the others because they are lobbying heavily for passage of SOPA.

Megaupload is reportedly part of one of the biggest criminal copyright infringement networks U.S. authorities have ever taken down. Seven people were indicted by a Virginia grand jury Jan. 19, and charged with racketeering, money laundering and other charges. Megaupload was allegedly using the Web site as a front for black market content swapping, and had many legitimate users on the site sharing many kinds of legal content. Computer hackers from the loose knit Anonymous collective have claimed responsibility for attacks on several high profile Web sites in revenge for the Department of Justice takedown of popular file-sharing Web site Megaupload.

Federal authorities indicted seven staff members of the popular file-sharing Web site Megaupload Thursday, but made a point of saying it had nothing to do with the SOPA and PIPA legislation currently in the U.S. Congress. The grand jury indictment is part of one of the largest criminal copyright cases ever.

Apple unveiled their latest attempt at shaking up what it sees as an industry in need of some technological innovation Jan. 19 when it announced iBooks 2, a do-it-yourself publishing kit for digital textbooks. It's meant to turn Apple's iPad into a learning tool and allow schools to begin building their own kinds of content including text, images and video.

A man who claims he owns half the social network Facebook was fined $5,000 by a federal judge for not providing information related to a case he filed against founder Mark Zuckerberg.

Samsung has been rumored to be interested in purchasing Research In Motion, the company that makes BlackBerry smartphones, but Samsung has now denied it has any interest in the Canadian company. Samsung doesn't want to buy them and they won't be doing any software licensing of BlackBerry software either, a Reuters report said Jan. 17.

Android powered smartphones are still the top choice overall in the U.S., but over the last three months, Apple iPhones were bought by nearly half of all people buying new phones. A new Nielsen report details a survey the company did, and it says 45% of new smartphone buyers went Apple, up from 25% in October.

February's Mobile World Congress could be the setting for Samsung's announcement of the Galaxy S3 smartphone, and it should be a worthy competitor to the new Droid Razr Maxx. While the price and release date aren't yet known for the Galaxy S3, Droid Razr Maxx will be sold by Verizon for $300 with a new two year contract. It will go on sale Jan. 26, and its release will coincide with Verizon's dropping the price of the Droid Razr to $200.

While Wikipedia, Reddit and sites on the Cheezburger Network black themselves out in protest over the SOPA bill, Flickr, Wired and Google have joined in the protest without going completely black. As Congress debates whether or not to pass the Stop Online Piracy Act and its sister bill the Protect IP Act in the Senate, Web sites across the U.S. have taken to the virtual streets to voice their opposition.

SOPA, the Stop Online Piracy Act working its way through the U.S. Congress, has inspired an online backlash punctuated by Wikipedia, Reddit, BoingBoing and others to start a blackout protest beginning tonight at midnight. Mozilla and sites in the Cheezburger Network will also join in, and even Google will support the protest with a link on its home page saying why they are against SOPA and its sister bill in the Senate, the Protect IP Act.

Apple's iPhone 5 and Samsung's Galaxy S3 should debut this year with the latter possibly slated to debut at February's Mobile World Congress in Spain. Samsung debuted the Galaxy S2 last year at the event, so it could do the same this year. Apple, however, has not indicated when the iPhone 5 will arrive.

Two new smartphones with the largest screen sizes available are coming soon to AT&T, and the HTC Titan II and Samsung Galaxy Note will stand out for more than just their size. Both will join AT&T's growing corps of 4G LTE-enabled devices, Titan II runs the Microsoft system and the Note includes a stylus.

Once the International Consumer Electronics Show ends for the year, the Mobile World Congress is the next big venue for smartphone makers to show off their newest gear. This year is no different, and both Samsung and HTC could be ready to unveil their next-generation devices. For Samsung, that means the Galaxy S3, and it would be following one of the most successful smartphones ever made in the Galaxy S2.

Verizon will debut the Motorola Droid Razr Maxx very soon, (no date announced yet), so if you're a Verizon customer ready for an upgrade, here is how the Maxx compares to the iPhone 4S. They are both quite thin, though neither is as thin as the original Droid Razr that came out in November. Razr Maxx's thickness is one of the only differences between it and the Razr, and it's thicker because of its bigger battery.

Tablet computer makers have had a hard time keeping up with Apple's iPad 2, but now Apple will try to outdo itself with the iPad 3 this March. Apple hasn't announced anything yet, but reports out of China show Apple's component suppliers are producing new parts for a March release.

It's hard to tell the difference between the Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime and the even newer Transformer Prime TF700T unless you know the TF700T has an upgraded display. The TF700T is the first tablet with a 1080p HD display, and Asus has also redesigned the back cover to improve GPS, Wi-Fi and bluetooth access.

Motorola is putting a Droid Razr 2.0 out January 26, so let's see how the Droid Razr Maxx compares to the popular Samsung Galaxy S2. Motorola announced the Razr Maxx at the International Consumer Electronics Show Jan. 9, and it's virtually identical to the Droid Razr, but with a bigger battery.

Apple once again didn't show up to International CES this year, but Lenovo debuted dozens of products, and their new IdeaTab S2 is the kind of tablet meant to cut into iPad 3 sales later this year.
