Megaupload Crackdown: SOPA/PIPA Inevitable?

Web sites connected to SOPA were attacked and temporarily knocked offline. Notorious hacker collective Anonymous took credit for the attacks that included Whitehouse.gov, the DOJ Web site, and Web sites for the U.S. Copyright Office and Recording Industry Association of America. Anonymous claimed to have hacked the government sites in retalliation for the Megaupload sites, and the others because they are lobbying heavily for passage of SOPA.

Federal authorities indicted seven staff members of the popular file-sharing Web site Megaupload Thursday, but made a point of saying it had nothing to do with the SOPA and PIPA legislation currently in the U.S. Congress. Samsung Denies Interest in Buying BlackBerry Maker RIM

Samsung has been rumored to be interested in purchasing Research In Motion, the company that makes BlackBerry smartphones, but Samsung has now denied it has any interest in the Canadian company. Samsung doesn't want to buy them and they won't be doing any software licensing of BlackBerry software either, a Reuters report said Jan. 17.

February's Mobile World Congress could be the setting for Samsung's announcement of the Galaxy S3 smartphone, and it should be a worthy competitor to the new Droid Razr Maxx. SOPA, the Stop Online Piracy Act working its way through the U.S. Congress, has inspired an online backlash punctuated by Wikipedia, Reddit, BoingBoing and others to start a blackout protest beginning tonight at midnight. Mozilla and sites in the Cheezburger Network will also join in, and even Google will support the protest with a link on its home page saying why they are against SOPA and its sister bill in the Senate, the Protect IP Act.
