Republican-Linked Group Pulls Support To Congress Aspirant Who Wanted To 'Hang' Rep. Omar
A Florida Republican running for Congress faced a backlash from his own camp after a campaign email suggested his supporters should hang Democrats including Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) "where they stand." The fundraising mail by George Buck also named House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ayanna Pressley and Rashida Tlaib as traitors.
Though Buck, who is campaigning to replace Rep. Charlie Crist (D-Fla.) in the House of Representatives, initially blamed a staff worker for the language used in the email, he later issued a public statement that suggested those who commit treason should face the death penalty.
The highly controversial email has angered even Buck's supporters. After days of silence, a conservative group has withdrawn its support to Buck. Speaking with USA Today, National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) spokesperson Rob Salera said Buck is no longer being supported by their “Young Guns” group, a coalition backing Republican candidates seeking to take congressional seats from Democrats in contested districts and states.
“Instead of doubling down on these disgraceful comments, the candidate ought to apologize unequivocally and denounce these unacceptable statements,” remarked Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA).
In November, Republican Danielle Stella, who is seeking to run against Rep. Omar, was banned by Twitter after calling for Omar to be hanged. Omar has received death threats before – but what makes these unique is that they came from political candidates.
The FBI is already investigating a death threat made against Omar in August. The congresswoman posted the message online: “We have a very capable person with a very big ‘Gun.’ They say we can’t get the Somali Stink out of the clean Minnesota air, but we’re going to enjoy the adventure.”
Rep. Omar is not the only Democratic politician to face death threats. Democratic presidential nominee hopeful Andrew Yang recently received a number of death threats via email before reporting them to the FBI. Another Democratic presidential candidate, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), has faced death threats as well, leading to the conviction of a man from Florida earlier this year.
