'Resident Evil' Joins 'Super Smash Bros Ultimate' For Thanksgiving
Four iconic characters from the “Resident Evil” series of games are coming to “Super Smash Bros. Ultimate” in time for Thanksgiving this year.
Fans of both the “Resident Evil” games and “Super Smash Bros. Ultimate” will be glad to know that four iconic characters from the popular survival-horror series will come and join the Nintendo brawler. Sadly, they won't be playable characters joining the roster of fighters – they'll be spirit guests that will appear on the Spirit Board during a Spirit Event.
Nintendo announced via the Nintendo Versus Twitter account that Chris Redfield, Leon Kennedy, Jill Valentine and Albert Wesker will be appearing on the Spirit Board for five days starting Nov. 29. The four will replace the Pokemon spirits that were made available in “Smash Ultimate” as part of last weekend's Spirit event, IGN noted.
“Conquer the looming fear! For 5 days starting 11/29, Chris, Leon, Wesker, and Jill will appear on the Spirit Board in Super #SmashBrosUltimate! Check it out!” Nintendo Versus tweeted.
GamesRadar noted that while fans might think it's odd for an M-rated survival horror shooter to have a crossover with a family-friendly brawler, it's worth noting that some “Resident Evil” titles have made their way to Nintendo's systems, particularly “Resident Evil Zero,” “Resident Evil 4,” “Resident Evil 5,” and “Resident Evil 6.”
It's also worth noting that the franchise has had crossovers with other titles. It was recently represented in the real-time card game “Teppen,” Destructoid noted. Three of the four “Resident Evil” characters have in one way or another appeared in other video game titles as well: Jill, Chris and Wesker have all appeared in the “Marvel Vs. Capcom” series of fighting games.
Leon, on the other hand, was one of the characters fans hoped to see in “Smash Ultimate” as the fifth playable character in the Fighters Pass, following only after Terry Bogard from “Fatal Fury.” His inclusion as a spirit guest, along with the three, simply indicates that he won't be a playable character anytime soon.
Still, regardless of whether any of the four become a playable character in the future, it's a good thing that “Resident Evil” is making its mark on “Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.”
