Umbrella Corporation lives. Or so the newest “Resident Evil” game’s trailer would have you believe.

Dubbed “Resident Evil Village,” the groundbreaking survival horror video game franchise was one of the 26 game trailers that was revealed in Sony’s event showcasing the PlayStation 5. Complete with creepy visuals, haunting narration, and (of course) mindless zombies, this will be the first original game in the franchise since 2017’s “Resident Evil: Biohazard.”

“Taking place a few years after the events of ‘ Resident Evil 7: Biohazard,’ in which protagonist Ethan Winters traveled to Louisiana to search for his missing wife, Mia, ‘Resident Evil Village’ sees the reunited Mia and Ethan living happily together and putting their shared nightmares of the Baker’s plantation house behind them,” said Comic Book Resources.

Comic Book Resources notes that although the game was announced at a Sony PS5 event, it will likely also be available for the PC and Xbox Series X.

Finally able to move on from the horrifying events of the previous game, Ethan’s world suddenly comes crashing down again when familiar protagonist Chris Redfield makes an appearance, setting off a chain of events that sees a distraught Ethan seeking answers to Chris’s shocking actions… and ultimately finding him in a mysterious village.

Unlike the cramped corridors of the Baker mansion in “ Resident Evil 7,” the fear of dark corners has been replaced with the anxiety of the unknown in “Resident Evil Village” as Ethan searches for answers within decrepit buildings among snow-covered trees.

Capcom launched the first “Resident Evil” (known as “Biohazard” in Japan) in 1996 and set the tone for a whole new genre in video games: survival horror. Undead zombies, attacking zombie dogs, B-movie dialogue, and dark mood music came together with a large map mostly covering an old mansion in Raccoon City.

Since then, the franchise has found success in five motion pictures starring Milla Jovovich with three directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, but the plot of the movies has been largely different from what the games have become.

Along with “Resident Evil Village,” other games announced at the Sony event included “Gran Turismo 7,” “Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart,” “Horizon II: Forbidden West,” “Hitman 3,” and “Spider-Man: Miles Morales.”
