KEY POINTS

  • Rey Mysterio plans to be an in-ring performer until he is 50 years old
  • Mysterio and his son are currently embroiled in a storyline with Finn Balor's faction
  • He will be turning 48 in December

Rey Mysterio, a bona fide legend in the world of pro wrestling, is still going strong on weekly WWE programming alongside his son Dominik.

Mysterio made his WWE debut on July 25, 2002, and fans around the world have been celebrating his illustrious career for the past few days.

But much like everyone else, Father Time remains undefeated and Mysterio will soon follow in the steps of so many pro athletes that have called it a career.

In an interview with Ariel Helwani, Mysterio pondered on the mortality of his in-ring career and when he plans to retire.

“Now that I'm getting closer to my fifties and I see my son [Dominik] wrestling, I tell myself that I want to go three more years and I don't want to go past 50,” he stated.

“But then I remind myself, what if I feel good? Can you still go another year? As of right now, my date has always been to not go over 50."

If Mysterio sticks to his plan of being an in-ring performer until 50, then he would have about two more years left as he turns 48 on December 11.

Currently, Mysterio and Dominik are in a feud with the Finn Balor-led faction The Judgment Day after they crashed his 20th anniversary celebration on the most recent episode of Raw, and Mysterio was put through a table to end their segment.

Fans have been wondering as to how long the father-son duo will be staying together on TV since WWE had previously hinted before that Dominik was showing signs of possibly turning heel.

So far, the company has held from that happening just yet, possibly until the conclusion of their storyline with The Judgment Day.

Mysterio was the ultimate underdog for young wrestling fans during the 2000s as his combination of athleticism and grit saw him reach the pinnacle of the sport when he won both the 2006 Royal Rumble and the prestigious World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania 22.

He continuously proved that his stature was not an obstacle to his rise to the top, instead using it as an asset to inspire a generation of pro wrestling fans.

At 47 years old, Mysterio has nothing left to prove between the ropes and it will surely be a sad day for fans around the world when he does decide to hang up the mask for good.
