Rhode Island Ferry Brawl Leaves Multiple Injured, Police Jump In To Break Fight
A fight that broke out Monday night on a boat servicing in Rhode Island left several people injured, the authorities said.
The brawl started as the boat was making its way back from Block Island to the Port Judith ferry terminal in Narragansett, the New York Post reported.
The ferry had left Block Island from a terminal close to Ballard's Beach Bar, a hotspot for tourists seeking to get drunk after getting off the ferry and heading straight to a beach party.
On Monday, the bar held its yearly Reggae Fest on the sand.
A witness, who observed cruisers from Narragansett, Charlestown, North Kingstown, and South Kingstown stationed along Great Island Road, said it was unclear what caused the fight.
A number of ambulances were summoned to the scene. The passengers who got off the ferry around 10:30 p.m. told WPRI 12 News there was a fight that caused chaos and drama.
It was not clear how many people were hurt or how serious the injuries were. Multiple razor wounds were reported in an initial alert, but International Business Times could not independently verify the information.
A video shared on Twitter showed officers jumping off a police boat and onto the ferry as it was moving to break up the conflict. According to the initial reports obtained from the caption of the video, the police led at least three individuals out of the ferry. They were all in handcuffs.
The officers from the Narragansett Police Department, the Coast Guard, and the Rhode Island State Police were the first responders to tackle the brawl.
There were reports of a firearm assault, but authorities did not confirm the same.
This is a developing story.
At least one man was hurt in a similar event on the water in July at Disney World, which involved a violent altercation between two families. As the two families waited in line to witness a show at Mickey's PhilharMagic theater in Magic Kingdom, a brawl broke out between them, which was caught on camera. The argument began when one of the family members left the queue to get her smartphone that was on an electric convenience vehicle. The other family allegedly pushed the girl as she attempted to return to the line where her family was waiting.
