A resident opened fire early Thursday at an assisted living housing complex in Westerly Rhode Island, killing one person and wounding two others before killing himself, police said.

The 66-year-old resident of Babcock Village started shooting into the main entrance of the complex around 10:30 a.m., police said. Two female employees and a female resident were hit by gunfire.

Rhode Island State Police said they had yet to determine a motive .

A 47-year-old employee was declared dead at the scene. The other wounded employee, 38, was reported in "extremely critical condition" after being flown to Yale New Haven Hospital. The injured resident, 66, was reported stable at Rhode Island hospital.

Police identified the alleged shooter from surveillance footage and tracked him to his room. He was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot.

“It’s a tragic day for Westerly and of course the victims,” Attorney General Peter Neronha said during a press conference Thursday afternoon.

Surrounding schools and hospitals were placed on lockdown as police secured the complex following the shooting. The lockdowns were eased by afternoon though most schools closed early and canceled afterschool programs.

“We are shocked and saddened that this tragedy has occurred. Our priority, as always, is the safety of our residents and staff,” complex owner Property Advisory Group & Affordable Housing Strategies Inc. said in a statement. “We are working with law enforcement to address this situation, and further questions should be referred to the Westerly Police and Rhode Island State Police.”
