KEY POINTS

  • Justin Roiland tendered his resignation as CEO of Squanch Games
  • He co-founded the video game developer in 2016
  • Hulu also severed ties with the embattled animator

Justin Roiland has left Squanch Games, the video game developer he co-founded seven years ago, amid the domestic abuse allegations against him.

On Wednesday, Squanch Games took to Twitter to announce the 42-year-old animator and voice actor's decision to vacate his post. The company revealed that Roiland actually tendered his resignation last week after news of his charges broke.

"On January 16, 2023, Squanch Games received Justin Roiland's resignation. The passionate team at Squanch will keep developing games we know our fans will love while continuing to support and improve 'High on Life,'" read the company's tweet.

"High on Life" is a science fiction video game created by Roiland and developed and published by Squanch Games.

Roiland started Squanch Games in 2016 with Tanya Watson, a former executive producer of Epic Games. In its first year, the company was called Squanchtendo. It was given its present name in 2017 under Roiland's reign as the company's sole CEO, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The developer had several releases, but its biggest success came when it launched the first-person shooter in 2022. "High on Life" quickly became Xbox Game Pass' biggest launch last year and the largest third-party launch in the platform's history, according to the outlet.

The announcement of Roiland's resignation came hours after Adult Swim revealed that it had cut ties with him even though he co-created "Rick and Morty" and voiced the two titular characters.

Unnamed sources told THR that in the wake of Adult Swim's decision to let go of Roiland, the voice roles would be recast since the show will continue on until the 10th season.

Meanwhile, Variety learned this Wednesday that Hulu also cut ties with Roiland and dropped him from "Solar Opposites" and "Koala Man."

"We have ended our association with Justin Roiland," 20th Television Animation and Hulu Originals told the outlet via a statement.

Earlier this month, the embattled producer made headlines after appearing in a court hearing to face charges filed against him by the Orange County District Attorney in southern California in May 2020.

According to a criminal complaint, Roiland was involved in a domestic abuse incident with a woman identified as "Jane Doe." He was arrested and released on a $50,000 bond in August 2020, as indicated in the legal document.

Roiland faces one felony count of domestic battery with corporal injury and one felony count of false imprisonment by menace, violence, fraud and/or deceit. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
