- Ritu Phogat wants to prove she deserves her spot in the World Grand Prix tourney

- Phogat warns the Chinese not to underestimate her
Following a recent victory over highly-regarded Chinese fighter Lin Heqin, Indian wrestling star Ritu Phogat effectively earned back her spot in the upcoming ONE Women’s Atomweight World Grand Prix.
Phogat is now scheduled to face No. 2-ranked atomweight contender Meng Bo of China in the first round of the tournament at ONE: Empower, which broadcasts live from the Singapore Indoor Stadium this Friday night, September 3.
Speaking at the virtual media day on Tuesday, August 31 in Singapore, Phogat doubled down on her self-belief and showed confidence ahead of her next contest.
“I’m extremely excited to be back in the Grand Prix. I’ve always maintained from day one that I belong in the Grand Prix and I’ve proved my mettle once again. I strongly believe that I deserve to be here and that’s what gives me the kick that I am where I belong. It is a homecoming for me,” Phogat said.
“I’m extremely elated to be on such a large scale and momentous platform. There are a lot of hopes pinning on me and I want to make sure that I live up to the expectations and hope of my fans and supporters. So yes, I feel completely on top of the world to be a part of the Grand Prix.”
While Phogat is riding high on her recent success—and deservedly so—her adversary Meng represents one of the toughest puzzles in ONE Championship’s atomweight division.
Boasting a record of 17-5, Meng possesses more than triple the amount of experience as Phogat.
She enters the bout riding a seven-fight winning streak, including five finishes, dating back to 2018.
Meng is the most talented athlete that Phogat has ever encountered in the Circle. Conversely, the Chinese star—who claims that knocking out the Indian wrestling icon wouldn’t be too difficult—believes she will claim victory with relative ease.
Phogat was quick to strike down such a narrative.
“Yes, I totally respect Meng Bo as she is an experienced fighter,” said Phogat when asked about Meng’s comments.
“But be warned, do not underestimate me because I am way more dangerous than what you have seen in the last time. I am the Indian tigress and you will see a completely different side of the Indian tigress in this upcoming match.”
