KEY POINTS

  • Saltwater crocodile named Casper chased Robert Irwin inside the enclosure
  • The terrifying chase resulted in Irwin yelling "bail!" to his crew
  • The late Steve Irwin had rescued the Leucistic crocodile back in 2002

Viewers of “Crikey! It’s the Irwins” are up for a heart-pounding episode for the season finale of the show as it will show Robert Irwin being chased by a massive saltwater crocodile during an intense feeding session.

Robert Irwin, 18, shared a video of the crocodile attack Saturday with his Instagram followers and wrote, “We’ve definitely saved the best for last, including one of the most intense croc feeds I’ve done! We prioritise natural behaviour with our crocs. By getting in their enclosures with them, and letting them put on those huge strikes from the water’s edge, they get to use all of their predatory instincts and they just love it!”

The son of the late Steve Irwin, who was then nicknamed “The Crocodile Hunter,” was filming at the Australian zoo when he was nearly attacked by a saltwater crocodile named Casper, weighing 772 pounds and a little over 12 feet in length.

The teen wildlife conservationist was trying to see if the crocodile was comfortable in his new habitat and if he was ready for a crocodile show. “That’s gonna entail someone jumping in with Casper, a crocodile in a brand-new environment, having no idea how he’s gonna react. Today, that person is me,” he said with a laugh.

The video shows Robert Irwin jumping into the enclosure with a slab of meat in his hand while another member of the show attended to Casper’s crocodile girlfriend, “Wendy,” to avoid problems during his feeding time.

“Casper has such a wild behavior, and since Dad first got Casper, he’s had that instinct. I’ve got no idea how he’s going to react, and, honestly, that’s quite terrifying,” Robert Irwin said in a voice-over as he walked to the edge of the animal pond, holding the slab of meat in his left hand.

Suddenly, Casper lunged at the 18-year-old, causing him to drop the slab of meat in fear and tell his team, “Bail! Bail! Bail!” as the crocodile pursued him in the enclosure, snapping its long jaws at him.

On his Instagram post, Robert added, “… safety for us is also crucial and you definitely have to know when to call it. And with such a powerful and quick croc like Casper, we had no choice but to bail!”

Steve Irwin had rescued Casper back in 2002. Talking about the Leucistic crocodile, Robert explained the reason behind his pale appearance stating that Leucism involves a partial loss of pigmentation in animals.
