Robots Dance To BTS' 'Ioniq: I'm On It' On Jimmy Fallon's 'The Tonight Show'
A team of inspector robots has showcased impressive dance moves on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon" and grooved to BTS' "Ioniq: I'm on It."
Fallon welcomed one of his robotic guests to the program's "Showbotics" segment Tuesday night, along with Boston Dynamics CEO Robert Playter, who explained the multitude of tasks robot, dubbed "Spot," can do.
After a playful interaction with the robot, Playter announced that they teamed up with BTS for a special number on the show.
"I love BTS. I've been waiting for this moment," Fallon said as he introduced the robot and its three companions before their performance.
Fallon did not hide his amazement as the robots grooved with utmost synchronicity. They even added a customary bow at the end of their number.
"That was amazing," the host told Playter as the segment wrapped up.
BTS members met the robots in 2021 when the famous septet teamed up with Hyundai Ioniq, an electric vehicle brand geared toward promoting a sustainable lifestyle. As part of the partnership, the boyband released the commercial tune "Ioniq," which became a viral dance challenge after Korean dancer and social media star Aiki performed it on TikTok.
In the same year, Hyundai arranged for a promotional video with BTS and the Boston Dynamics robots who took part in a push-up challenge with V and even copied the complex dance moves of the group's main dancer, J-Hope.
As explained by Playter prior to the dance number, Spot is a walking robot with four legs that are similar to a canine. It also has a head that can grab objects and open doors during an inspection procedure.
"So, Spot goes into dangerous places where people don't want to go, nuclear power plants, electric utilities, and does inspections in making sure that the equipment is running well. So we made Spot as a platform. You can attach lots of equipment, including the arm and the head… But we've also recently learned some new tricks," he added, before asking the host, "Would you like to see?"
Fallon gamely agreed, after which Playter asked a member of his staff to bring in a can of beer. He also handed a glass to Fallon. Much to the host's amusement, Spot poured beer into his glass before tossing the empty can at the back of the stage.
