The odds for Roger Federer to win the Australian Open went from "very good" to "excellent" rather quickly. On Tuesday, Federer's most daunting opponent, Rafael Nadal, retired in a quarterfinal match against Marin Cilic, thus weakening an already beleaguered field in Melbourne.

Nadal had the second-best odds (4/1) of winning the Australian Open on Jan. 10, trailing only Federer, who had slightly better than 2/1 odds, according to Bovada.lv.

With Nadal out, Federer's odds have jumped to 8/11.

Cilic, whose best performance in Melbourne came in 2010 when he advanced to the semifinals, is the clear No. 2 favorite at 10/3 odds, according to Sky Bet.

The rest of the field is composed of longshots: Hyeon Chung (8/1), Kyle Edmund (10/1), Tomas Berdych (14/1) and Tennys Sandgren (66/1).

Federer's next opponent will be Berdych on Wednesday at 3:30 a.m. ET. Should the Swiss legend advance, he will play the winner of Sandgren-Chung — the two Cinderella stories of the tournament. In the fourth round, Sandgren upset Dominic Thiem, while Chung upset Novak Djokovic.

Should Federer win the Australian Open it would be the first time winning back-to-back titles in Melbourne since 2007. The 36-year-old has won the Australian Open five times.
