Roger Goodell has a net worth of $150 million. The NFL commissioner is receiving $40 million as annual pay including bonuses.
Goodell has been the NFL commissioner since 2006. Under his watch, the league faced different issues such as domestic violence of some players, Colin Kaepernick’s national anthem protest, “Spygate,” “Bountygate,” and “Deflategate” scandals, among others.
According to Fan Buzz, aside from the negative issues, he has brought forth positive ones. This includes ending the lockout in 2011 and approving the new CBA in 2020. The commissioner was also instrumental in bringing the NFL to Europe and Mexico via the NFL International Series and NFL Network.
When compared to what the other commissioners of major sporting leagues in the U.S. are receiving, Goodell is making much more. NBA’s Adam Silver has $35 million while MLB commissioner Rob Manfred’s fortune is estimated to be $25 million. This makes the NFL commissioner one of the most influential people, not just in the U.S. but also in global sports.
As such, fans and critics are looking up to him to make a stand on controversial issues. Finally, after some pressure from stakeholders, the commissioner made a stance. Goodell released a statement that supports Black Lives Matter on Twitter. The NFL is composed of about 70 percent African-American players. However, it backfired and drew strong reactions from players and other sports personalities.
San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich, a known critic of the administration and a vocal opposition of racial injustice, claims that Goodell cannot support the movement but allow some owners to donate to the campaign of Donald Trump in 2016. In a report from ESPN, Goodell’s statement did not mention Colin Kaepernick, who has been put out of the league since he began protesting during the national anthem before the games.
Due to the ongoing pandemic, the American sports executive offered to take zero salary in April 2020. Per Bleacher Report, the move will make no impact on the scheduled start of the NFL by September. The league also announced some pay cuts to executives and managers. Major sporting leagues and events have to adjust with the COVID-19 effectively cancelling the games and affecting revenues. Aside from the reduced salary of the top management, the NFL also introduced the Draft-A-Thon as a means to help the less privileged affected by the pandemic.
In 2017, Goodell signed a massive extension that will see him make around $500 million by the time he retires. The estimated amount of the deal is $200 million and will expire in 2024.
