'Rogue One' Writer Calls EA 'An Embarrassment' For 'Star Wars' Games
Many “Star Wars” fans are unhappy about the multiple game cancellations by Electronic Arts (EA), and they are not alone. “Rogue One” writer Gary Whitta is also angry about the recent developments. In a recent interview, he called the recent decisions by EA for the games “an embarrassment.”
In an interview with Kinda Funny Games, a video of which has been posted on YouTube, Whitta just buried his face in his hands after he heard about the “Star Wars” games EA recently canceled. When the writer finally responded, he said that it was embarrassing.
EA signed a deal with Disney in 2013 for a 10-year license. Whitta pointed out that halfway through that deal, a review showed that the games maker has released two “Battlefront Games,” one of which didn’t have a story, and both of them were “mediocre.”
The writer added that the micro-transaction problem of the “Battlefront 2” was also a “major, major embarrassment.” Disney had to step in to get EA to fix that problem, which they did promptly. But the damage to the “Star Wars” brand was done, according to the “Rogue One” writer.
Of the new games that were supposed to be released in the near future, EA has canceled most of them. So far, the company hasn’t made any announcements about what other games they will work on as a replacement for the canceled “Star Wars” games, except for a smaller 2020 game that they can release quickly. Whitta felt that this track record is unacceptable and even suggested that Disney should look for a “get out clause” to end the licensing deal.
Whitta had some harsh words for the way things have unfolded with EA. He said that the “Star Wars” games have been “catastrophically mismanaged.” He called the gaming license the “crown jewel” of gaming licenses that has been “squandered.”
Meanwhile, EA has been focusing on creating more content for “Galaxy of Heroes” and “Battlefront 2.” Both the games are highly popular. Despite the initial hiccups with the micro-transaction that put off a lot of gamers, the company has managed to get players interested again with new content and adjustments to the game.
EA announced on Twitter that the Millennium Falcon, which is arguably the most popular “Star Wars” ship, is headed towards “Galaxy of Heroes.” As far as “Battlefront 2” is concerned, the game is getting new playable characters this year, like Count Dooku, and the company also announced a triple XP event on Twitter.
