KEY POINTS

  • Roman Reigns and Brock Lesnar battled it out as the headline attraction of two pay-per-views
  • Reigns credited Lesnar's decision to debut "Cowboy Brock" for improving their SummerSlam match
  • WWE ending their rivalry then came at the right time

Roman Reigns is continuing his reign as the undisputed WWE Universal Champion as the top-tier pro wrestling company is heading into the Survivor Series WarGames pay-per-view.

"The Tribal Chief" earned the distinction by beating Brock Lesnar for the WWE Championship at WrestleMania 38 and in their stellar rematch at SummerSlam this year.

While many fans were starting to sour on them facing each other repeatedly, Lesnar debuting the more laidback "Cowboy Brock" character changed how fans treated their rivalry.

Reigns recently spoke with Jonathan Snowden of The Ringer and credited Lesnar for making the change.

"To me, if he doesn't level up and showcase the 'Cowboy Brock' character, then don't nobody give a [expletive] about Brock [Lesnar] next to 'The Tribal Chief.' I was able to push my level up, which he knew, OK, 'this guy's creating different levels and layers to this, let me step my game up.' And he did that," Reigns said.

"People probably said, 'Oh God, not Brock-Roman again.' And then we go out there and deliver a classic. Got better on that last one. And I think that's the key to the kingdom. How do we continually get better? How do we upgrade? How do we push ourselves to the next level?"

Their SummerSlam match certainly delivered thanks to the match stipulations, but also because of every high-spot moment in it.

With Lesnar coming out to the ring in a tractor, both men pulled out all the stops to try and get the other down for 10 counts.

Lesnar then used the tractor to dump Reigns into the ring, eventually tipping the ring with the said machinery.

Reigns eventually got the better of Lesnar by burying him underneath a pile of rubble composed of the broken commentary table and other objects at ringside.

But before the match, the on-mic exchanges between Reigns and Lesnar made their SummerSlam match a must-watch despite fans already expecting Reigns to win against his biggest rival.

They were able to squeeze out one more good match out of one another before eventually moving on to other feuds.

Their SummerSlam match exceeded expectations and was heavily praised by the fans, with many crediting Lesnar's character being the key to unlocking a new dynamic.

WWE is not expected to go back into the Reigns-Lesnar well anytime soon as their SummerSlam match was already a perfect ending to their long story.

"That was just a perfect recipe of two performers who want to be the best, and both have pretty legitimate claims to that territory. And when you get two guys who compete, it's not backstabbing," Reigns also noted.

As fan attention shifts to Survivor Series WarGames this Sunday, November 26, the rivalry was instrumental in cementing Reigns' run with the titles.
