Oscar-winning filmmaker Alexander Payne has been accused of sexual misconduct by actress Rose McGowan, who said that she was just 15 years old when the incident happened.
The actress opened up about her alleged negative experience with “The Descendants” helmer in a series of tweets she shared on Aug. 16 and 17. In her tweets, McGowan recalled everything that happened to her when she met Payne for the first time.
McGowan alleged that Payne sat her down and played a “soft-core” pornographic movie that he directed under a different name. The “Charmed” star also claimed that the filmmaker left her “on a street” after the incident, Variety reported.
“Alexander Payne. You sat me down & played a soft-core porn movie you directed for Showtime under a different name. I still remember your apartment in Silverlake. You are very well-endowed. You left me on a street corner afterward. I was 15,” McGowan tweeted.
The actress also uploaded a photo of herself when she was 15 and demanded an apology.
“I just want an acknowledgment and an apology. I do not want to destroy. This was me at 15,” McGowan wrote alongside the picture.
The actress opened up futher about the incident in a conversation with Variety, saying that she auditioned for Payne at the age of 15. She claimed that the “Sideways” helmer took her to his home where the alleged incident happened.
McGowan said that she stopped giving auditions and took a break of 6 years from acting after that particular incident.
The actress also shared that she did not understand what happened to her at that time and looked at it as just a “sexual encounter.” However, as soon as the stories about Harvey Weinstein started to come out, she got to know the reality of that alleged incident.
“I feel very badly for my 15-year-old self. I had auditioned for him. He took me home afterward. I quit acting after that and then was discovered by Ilene Staple (a friend of Gregg Araki) 6 years later. It wasn’t until after the HW [Harvey Weinstein] stories came out that I reframed the Payne of it all. I had for years looked at it as a sexual encounter, not understanding what it really was. It was a grooming situation. The first time I’d been shown straight porn,” Variety quoted McGowan, as saying.
During the conversation, the “Scream” star said that the director left her in front of a cafe to find her way home after the incident.
“He left me on the corner in front of Café Tropical in Silverlake to find my own way home. I feel extreme emotional exhaustion today,” McGowan told the media outlet.
McGowan is considered to be one of the distinguished voices of the “Me Too” movement. She was one of the earlier women to come out and openly speak about her horrifying ordeal with Weinstein. The disgraced movie producer is currently serving a 23-year sentence in New York.
