  • Fleisher was reported to be Sony's top choice in January to direct when the studio needed to find a new director
  • Antonio Banderas is set to join the film's cast alongside stars Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg

Sony Pictures said Monday Ruben Fleischer has officially signed on to direct the long-gestating “Uncharted” film and that Antonio Banderas would be joining stars Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg onscreen.

Fleisher reportedly closed the deal with Sony to direct the film adaptation of the popular PlayStation franchise over the weekend. His name first came up in reports in January, saying he was reportedly Sony’s top choice to direct the film.

His most recent directing credits for Sony include “Zombieland: Double Tap” and “Venom.”

“Uncharted” isn’t the first game-to-film adaptation he’s been attached to, either. He was reportedly attached to direct a film adaptation of “Spy Hunter” around 2013, though nothing came of it.

Sony also said Banderas would be joining the cast alongside the news of Fleisher directing, though Sony didn’t say who he would be playing.

Banderas is another part of the “Uncharted” team with a long history with Sony Pictures, going back to early hits like “Desperado” and “The Mask of Zorro.” He is coming off of an acclaimed performance in 2019’s “Pain and Glory” that earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor.

Two other actors confirmed to be joining are Sophia Ali from “Grey’s Anatomy” and Tati Gabrielle from “The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.”

“Uncharted” is scheduled to release in theaters on March 5, 2021.
