Rudy Gobert Net Worth: Coronavirus Positive Jazz Star To Earn $25 Million This Year
KEY POINTS
- Rudy Gober tested positive for COVID-19
- Donoval Mitchell has also tested positive
- The NBA suspends its season until further notice
Rudy Gobert’s net worth is around $20 million. He has made the headlines lately as the first NBA player to be diagnosed with COVID-19.
The defensive specialist is currently averaging 15 points and 14 rebounds for the Utah Jazz. His presence was instrumental for his team’s 41-23 win-loss record which is good for 4th place in the stacked Western Conference. Gobert made the All-Star last February as a reserve for Team Giannis.
The Stifle Tower was drafted by the Denver Nuggets in 2013 but was shipped to the Jazz where he has played all his seasons in the NBA. As a Jazz player, he won the Most Improved Player award once and received the Defensive Player of the Year twice.
According to Sportrac, Gobert signed a four-year contract worth $102 million with the Jazz in 2017. He is now in his third year and will receive $25 million this season. The French native will test the free agency waters next year. However, his future remains uncertain at the moment.
The 7-footer tested positive for the coronavirus disease on March 11, prompting the suspension for the rest of the season by commissioner Adam Silver. Later, teammate Donovan Mitchell also tested positive for COVID-19. Both players have posted messages on their social media accounts and offered apologies to those affected.
The suspension comes not a surprise as the highly contagious pandemic forced sporting events around the world to suspend activities until further notice. In other leagues, games are played with no fans. These efforts are being done to contain the spread of the deadly virus. Millions are lost in revenues but the safety of the players, coaches, team staff and arena employees must be given priority.
The NBA announced it will suspend the games for one month and then make an evaluation after the period has lapsed.
The 27-year-old angered many fans and teammates after testing positive. In a press conference days prior to his diagnosis, he joked with members of the media and touched several microphones on the table. He said he did not know he was already infected at that time.
It seems Gobert has drawn the ire of his fellow teammates as well. Teammates are frustrated that he approached the situation lightly and often joked about it. In the end, it backfired as he was the first reported NBA player to have contacted the disease.
