Rumor: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X Reveals Could Happen Early
KEY POINTS
- The E3 2020 has been officially canceled due to COVID-19
- Due to the cancellation, Sony and Microsoft are reportedly planning to reveal their next gen consoles early
- PS5 and Xbox Series X could reportedly be unveiled this May 2020
Bad news: the E3 2020 has been canceled. Good news: it could force Sony and Microsoft to unveil their next generation consoles earlier than expected.
E3 2020 was initially scheduled from June 9 to 11, but it has since been canceled due to the ongoing health crisis brought by the coronavirus. In the wake of the cancellation, industry analyst Daniel Ahmad reported that the planned reveals during the said event have been moved out of that single week.
While there will still be announcements during the supposed E3 schedule, Ahmad claimed that some reveals are now planned “much earlier” and a few others on a “much later” date.
As for the official showcase of the next generation consoles – specifically, the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X – Ahmad shared it will occur at an earlier date.
However, the analyst for Niko Partners emphasized that there could still be changed in the official reveals of PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X due to the uncertainties surrounding the COVID-19 crisis.
“This is the one time I will actually add a caveat, for the last sentence in this case, as we are living through an unprecedented situation and this is the one time where external factors such as COVID-19 could actually change plans right at the last minute. But we'll see,” Ahmad shared.
On the other hand, according to a report by Video Game Chronicles, Sony and Microsoft are said to be planning for a May reveal for their respective consoles.
The report also cited that Microsoft is still aiming to push through a digital E3 showcase, which is different from its planned announcement in May.
As usual, fans should take these rumors with a grain of salt, especially since there is no official word yet from Sony and Microsoft.
It is also worth noting that Sony has been grappling with the negative effects of the coronavirus in recent days. After delaying the release of “The Last of Us Part 2” and “Iron-Man VR” due to the crisis, the entertainment and tech giant has also reportedly been struggling with the production and pricing of their next generation gaming console.
