Rutgers Uses Last-Second Four-Point Play To Upset Villanova [VIDEO]
Rutgers senior Jonathan Mitchell hit a three-pointer and free throw with less than a second remaining Wednesday to lift the Scarlet Knights over No. 10 Villanova.
Mitchell's desperation shot came from about 25 feet out. Villanova called a timeout after the foul by Corey Fisher, but Mitchell calmly went to the line and sank the free throw to put the Scarlet Knights up by one.
After I hit the shot I couldn't believe it went in, Mitchell told the AP. They called the timeout and I decided to calm down, relax, breathe. Coach asked me if I wanted to sit down. I'm in the gym shooting at 12, 1 a.m. and I said to myself it's just another night in the gym with the lights out. I stepped up like a senior and made it.
Following the final buzzer, the Rutgers students rushed the court in celebration.
The victory is one of the biggest in Rutgers regular season history. The school reached the Final Four in 1976 but has become a Big East basement dweller over the many years since.
Here's video of the thrilling finish to the game.
