  • She shut down the rumors that she responded to Olivia Rodrigo's "Drivers License"
  • Joshua Bassett congratulated Carpenter on her new single

Sabrina Carpenter is setting the record straight and addressing the speculation surrounding her new single, "Skin."

When the "Girl Meets World" star released her new song "Skin" Friday, fans speculated that the track may have been her response to Olivia Rodrigo's smash hit "Drivers License," which some have claimed was a dig toward her and her rumored boyfriend, Joshua Bassett, who was Rodrigo's ex. Carpenter weighed in on the rumors Sunday, clarifying that she did not write a “diss track” about Rodrigo and her new song.

"Thank you to everyone who has listened to skin especially those who have opened their minds to lyrically what i was trying to get across," the 21-year-old singer and actress wrote on Instagram.

"I wasn’t bothered by a few lines in a (magnificent) song and wrote a diss track about it," she added, referring to Rodrigo's single without directly mentioning it.

In Rodrigo's "Drivers License," she sings, "And you're probably with that blonde girl / Who always made me doubt / She's so much older than me."

Meanwhile, Carpenter's new song contains the lyrics, "Maybe then we could pretend / There’s no gravity in the words we write / Maybe you didn’t mean it / Maybe ‘blonde’ was the only rhyme."

In her lengthy Instagram post, however, Carpenter made it clear that her song isn't calling anyone out. She stressed that she was already at the "tipping point in my life" and was "inspired to do what I usually do to cope, write something that I wish I could have told myself in the past."

"People can only get to you if you give them the power to. and a lot of people were trying to get to me. the song isn’t calling out one single person. some lines address a specific situation, while other lines address plenty of other experiences I’ve had this past year," she continued.

Carpenter added that the song reflected a lot of things in her life and how many things have gotten under her skin. She explained she is still learning not to give other people power over her feelings, and she understands that many share the same struggles, so she asks fans not to use her song to spread hate.

"I don’t want this to become an endless cycle so please don’t take this as an opportunity to send more hate anyone’s way. lots of love to u all. thanks for letting me grow," she concluded.

Meanwhile, amid the drama surrounding him, Carpenter and Rodrigo, Bassett showed his support to Carpenter by sharing her song's cover art on Instagram and congratulated her on the single, People reported.

"Been stuck in my head since I heard it!!!" Bassett wrote on his Instagram Story Friday. "Congratulations @sabrinacarpenter on 'skin,' the new label, & all that's to come!!!"
