Six people are dead and 18 are injured after a mass shooting early Sunday in downtown Sacramento. Police are continuing their search for the gunman.

The shooting happened around 2 a.m. near a strip of bars and restaurants. The area was left with a devastating crime scene of blood and shattered glass.

Police said 12 of the 18 who were injured were taken to nearby hospitals, and some are suffering from critical injuries. Police recovered “at least one firearm” at the scene.

Police Chief Kathy Lester called the shooting “a really tragic, unfortunate situation.” She added that the scene is “complex and complicated.”

It is not clear if the victims were targeted or how many shooters were involved. Police have asked for more information from witnesses or anyone with recordings of the shooting.

A video posted to Twitter shows people running through the street with the sound of rapid gunfire.

“Right now, our investigators are arriving on scene,” Lester said in a briefing. “This is very, very preliminary, so we do not have a lot of details to share.”

“We are asking for the public’s help. If anyone saw anything, has video or can provide any information to the police department, we are asking for their assistance,” she said.

Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg posted on Twitter: “Words can’t express my shock & sadness this morning. The numbers of dead and wounded are difficult to comprehend. We await more information about exactly what transpired in this tragic incident."
