KEY POINTS
- Liverpool defeated Man City 1-0 in the league on Sunday
- It ended City's 21-match unbeaten streak in the Premier League
- Mohamed Salah scored the winner at Anfield
Bayern Munich forward Sadio Mane believes Liverpool FC will return to their best after the Reds defeated Manchester City 1-0 at Anfield.
Mane's comments came on Sunday after Liverpool's win over reigning champions City on Sunday. Mohamed Salah netted the winner in what was Liverpool's just third victory in the 2022-23 Premier League. It also ended Pep Guardiola and Co.'s incredible 21-man unbeaten streak in the English top-flight.
"I'm very happy for the boys that they beat City. I couldn't watch it because we were on the bus. I have a lot of faith in the boys and the coach that they'll get back to the top!" Mane said in an interview on Sunday, according to Goal.
After six memorable seasons at Liverpool, Sane parted ways with the Merseyside club in the summer of 2022 and joined Bayern Munich.
On Sunday, Mane was also on the goals chart as he netted Bayern Munich's fourth goal in their superb 5-0 win over Freiburg in the Bundesliga.
The 30-year-old Mane finished his Liverpool stint with 120 goals and 48 assists in 269 competitive appearances for the Reds. He helped the side win six trophies, including the Premier League and Champions League.
Mane has started his new life in the German capital on a high as he scored nine goals and an assist in 16 games across competitions.
Meanwhile, the 1-0 win over Manchester City saw Liverpool return to the top 10 in the league table. The Anfield side is placed eighth with 13 points from nine games. Unfortunately, the memorable Sunday night in Merseyside for Jurgen Klopp was marred by Diogo Jota's injury.
It has been reported that Jota, who was stretchered off the field just before the full-time whistle, has suffered a serious calf injury and his chances of playing in the upcoming FIFA World Cup is now in doubt. The Portuguese winger is due to undergo scans on Monday to determine the extent of his injury.
Liverpool can only hope Jota's injury isn't very serious as the club is already without Colombian winger Luis Diaz for the rest of the year.
Klopp and Co. are scheduled to host West Ham in the Premier League on Wednesday before they take on Nottingham Forest in an away fixture.
