‘Salem’ Season 2 Premiere Date Announced; 6 Spoilers Before The WGN Series Returns
“Salem” will return with more spellbinding drama when the hit fantasy series returns for Season 2 on Sunday, April 5. WGN America announced the renewal of the supernatural thriller in May 2014, adding that the upcoming installment would consist of 13 bone-chilling episodes.
“I could not be more thrilled or more proud of our cast, writers and crew who made this show come alive,” the show's executive producer, Brandon Braga, said in a statement. “The fans have been fantastic and we plan to continue keeping them on the edge of their seats.”
Curious what type of dark magic the historical drama will be casting this spring? Well, we’ve rounded up everything we know thus far about the show’s mystical second season. Check it out:
1. Season 2 Synopsis
According to the Season 2 summary of “Salem,” viewers can anticipate the Witch War to swing into full effect come April – with the Massachusetts’ town sitting at the epicenter of the war.
“The Grand Rite, which was triggered at the end of Season 1, is now underway and death it in the air,” the synopsis teases, adding that Mary (Janet Montgomery) will find herself in a bit of a pickle come Season 2. Not only must she gain control over Captain John (Shane West) and the citizens of Salem “in order to bring her plan to completion,” but Mary will also go head-to-head with those “lurking in the shadows” who threaten her position.
2. The Son of The Devil
Mary’s son (Oliver Bell), who Tituba (Ashley Madekwe) convinced to give up to the devil, will play an interesting role in Season 2. “You’re absolutely going to see more of the boy," Braga revealed to Zap2it. “We’ve had ideas since we created this show, Adam [Simon] and I, about what we would do with this boy and what he means and what he means for Mary.”
Braga added that Mary’s son will act as an influence on her when the series returns -- but what he'll inspire is still up in the air. “That’s what’s interesting about the appearance of the child. Is this going to put her on a path of redemption or a path of deeper [evil]?” he questioned.
We have a feeling it’s going to be the latter – especially after watching the first released Season 2 teaser:
3. John’s Fate Revealed
According to the showrunner, John’s life was left hanging in the balance when the freshman season concluded. For those who may not remember, he was shot and basically bleeding to death until a group of Indians stepped in. But did they save his life?
“What interest would the Indians even have in John?” Braga revealed to Zap2it. “What is it about John that they’ve now saved him twice? So there’s a mystery that we’re going to explore out in those woods.”
4. Mercy
Elise Eberle will return as the super creepy character Mercy when Season 2 premieres. Fans were given a sneak peak of her role in a new trailer for “Salem”:
5. New Characters
According to reports, Lucy Lawless ("Xena: Warrior Princess"), Stuart Townsend ("Betrayal") and Joe Doyle ("Raw") will be joining the cast of “Salem” when Season 2 returns to WGN America.
Lawless will play one of the "last remaining survivors from a line of ancient German witches," Townsend will take on the role of a doctor looking to "uncover the secrets of Salem" and Doyle will portray the son of the Countess.
6. Mary’s Competition
Braga revealed to Zap2it that Mary might have more competition than she thought as Anne (Tamzin Merchant) rises to power. “Anne, we knew she was going to be a cradle witch,” he revealed. “It was just a matter of when we reveal it, how we reveal it, will she believe it?”
The EP added that Anne will unleash her powers after she fiercely tries to deny her witchy-blood. “And we see, my God, she may be more powerful than Mary. What will she do with this definitive knowledge [in Season 2]?”
