Salty Watermelon Pepsi To Debut In Japan: It's Not As Weird As You Think
Salty Watermelon Pepsi is the latest exotic flavor to be rolled out by Pepsi Japan. It's not as weird as you might think, given Japanese culinary customs.
Salty Watermelon Pepsi will make its debut July 24. The red-colored soda will come in a 490-milliliter bottle, according to Pepsi Japan's website.
While the idea of mixing watermelon and salt into a beverage seems strange by Western standards, it's not that unusual a concept in Japan, according to the blog Japanese Snack Reviews.
This isn't a bad flavor choice, actually, as watermelon and summer are inextricably linked and the Japanese do salt their melons. If you have sub-par watermelon which isn't sweet enough, salting it a little will make it taste better, Japanese Snack Reviews explains. The same goes for apples. However, don't salt your fruit like you do your fries or you'll be filled with regret.
Salty Watermelon Pepsi is not the only odd soda flavor made by Pepsi Japan. The company previously released Pepsi Shiso, inspired by the Japanese herb, and Ice Cucumber Pepsi.
