“Salute Your Shorts” star Kirk Baily has passed away in Los Angeles after battling lung cancer for months. He was 59.
The actor’s domestic partner, Ranjani Brow, confirmed to Variety Wednesday that he died on Feb. 27.
In an interview with TMZ, Baily’s family revealed that he was only diagnosed with lung cancer six months ago.
He is survived by Brow and his two children.
Bailey starred in several films and TV shows, but his most notable role was the dim-witted camp counselor Kevin “Ug” Lee on the Nickelodeon 1991-92 sitcom “Salute Your Shorts.”
The series, which focused on young campers at the fictional Camp Anawanna, was based on creator Steve Slavkin’s 1986 book “Salute Your Shorts: Life at Summer Camp.”
Aside from Baily, the Nick sitcom starred Megan Berwick, Erik MacArthur, Michael Bower, Tim Eyster, Venus DeMilo and Danny Cooksey.
In 2019, the New York native attended the reunion of the show’s cast in Hollywood at the Good Burger pop-up shop. The reunion was documented in a video shared by the YouTube channel wetmovie1. During the reunion, Baily led the trivia session for attendees.
When “Salute Your Shorts” was not renewed for a third season, Baily moved on to other projects. He made guest appearances on several TV shows, including “7th Heaven,” “Felicity,” “Melrose Place,” “NYPD Blue” and “Star Trek: Voyager,” according to E! News.
The late actor also ventured into voice acting. He was involved in several anime shows and video games, including “Cowboy Bebop,” “Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex” and “Condemned 2: Bloodshot.”
He also did “additional voice” roles in famous animated films such as “Despicable Me 2,” “Hotel Transylvania” and “Frozen.”
His most recent projects were 2020’s “The Spongebob Movie: Sponge on the Run” and 2021’s “Night of the Animated Dead,” as per People.
Fans paid tribute to Baily on social media after the news of his death broke.
“R.I.P. Kirk Baily, who played lovable camp counselor Ug on SALUTE YOUR SHORTS, a show I couldn't get enough of as a summer camp-loving kid. Thanks for the laughs,” reporter Jeff Sneider wrote on Twitter.
“Camp Anawanna, we hold you in our hearts. And when I think about you, I hope we never part.' Ug was always one of the funniest characters in the show, and it was one of the few live action shows I enjoyed as a kid. So hearing Kirk Baily passed actually really hurts,” another fan tweeted.
