Sam Raimi Discusses Doctor Strange, Professor X's Interaction: 'Different Kind Of Fun For The Audience'
Director Sam Raimi has opened up about Doctor Strange’s interaction with Professor X in the highly anticipated Marvel movie, "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness," noting it was going to be like some "schmo" meeting James Bond for the first time.
While the fans are excited to watch the characters together on-screen for the first time, the director fueled the anticipation by revealing their first interaction will be "fun for the audience" as they don't know each other, but the viewers know both of them.
"Sometimes the best answer is to just let the character who’s experiencing this new character react truthfully," the 62-year-old director told Rolling Stone over the weekend.
The director explained how Doctor Strange (played by Benedict Cumberbatch) wouldn't make a big deal about meeting Professor X (played by Patrick Stewart) as they both belong to two different universes.
"Now, if there was a famous character from another universe that appeared in Multiverse of Madness, I’m not sure that our Doctor Strange would even know who he was," Raimi explained. "He might blow him off and not make it any big deal at all."
Saimi explained Doctor Strange's truthful response would be engaging and funny for the audience. "I think a truthful response can sometimes be the funniest or the most engaging for an audience."
"You put them in a position like, 'Man, you don’t know who that guy is? Oh, my God!' It’s like if some schmo was meeting James Bond onscreen for the first time, and said, 'Buddy, you’ll have the martini the way I serve it. Get me?' 'Don’t you know that’s James Bond?!'" he added. "That’s a different kind of fun for the audience to have."
A new clip from the flick was dropped last week featuring a battle between Gargantos and Doctor Strange.
Ahead of the release, the official Twitter handle of the movie also teased a new character, named America Chavez (played by Gomez). Previously, fans got a glimpse of Evil Doctor Strange and supervillain Baron Mordo.
"Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness" is slated to release this Friday in theaters. The movie also stars Xochitl Gomez, Elizabeth Olsen, Bruce Campbell, Benedict Wong and Chiwetel Ejiofor.
