Samsung Foldable Phone Will Have Bigger Battery Than Galaxy S9
Samsung’s highly anticipated foldable phone — currently dubbed Galaxy X — is reportedly housing a battery that has a bigger capacity than the 3,000 mAh of the Galaxy S9 flagship phone.
According to Sammobile, it has learned from a supply chain report that the upcoming Galaxy X foldable handset will have a big battery capacity because the South Korean tech company is set to commence production of flexible batteries with capacities ranging from 3,000 mAh to 6,000 mAh later this year.
Samsung has been quietly developing flexible batteries for years. The firm even showcased a prototype four years ago during the InterBattery 2014 event in South Korea. At the time, it was believed that Samsung intended the flexible batteries to be only used in its wearable devices like the Gear S and the Gear Fit due to the prototype’s small 210 mAh capacity.
Samsung hasn’t updated the industry about its flexible battery project since then. Going by what supply chain sources are saying now, it’s possible that Samsung is at a stage wherein it’s already capable of producing flexible batteries with large capacities. The batteries are also said to have commercial value, so Samsung SDI can now sell them to customers including Samsung Electronics.
Given the large capacities of the flexible batteries, it’s safe to assume that Samsung would be using one to power up the Galaxy X. On the very least the foldable phone could come with at least 3,000 mAh battery. However, Samsung is said to be moving forward with bigger batteries for the handsets that are launching next year, starting with the Galaxy S10. Hence, it’s very likely for the Galaxy X to come with a bigger battery than this year’s Galaxy S9 flagship device.
Samsung is believed to be unveiling its 10th anniversary Galaxy S phone at CES 2019 in January. Meanwhile, the company hasn’t said anything about the launch of its foldable phone. Nonetheless, many surmise that Samsung could be introducing the Galaxy X in February 2019 during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
As per usual, nothing is set in stone. Samsung hasn’t confirmed anything about the Galaxy S10 and the Galaxy X foldable phone yet. Therefore, fans should take all these reports with a grain of salt, at least for now.
