  • Samsung released a new budget handset in the Galaxy A51
  • The new device sells for $399 -- the same price as the 2020 iPhone SE
  • It offers a slew of features not found on Apple's budget handset, however

Samsung is releasing a new budget-oriented smartphone in the U.S., shortly after Apple released the 2020 iPhone SE. The new smartphone also comes at the wallet-friendly price of $399, but it offers a slew of features not found in Cupertino's handset.

As per Ars Technica, the new Galaxy A51 has come to the U.S. via Samsung's online store and an assortment of carriers and retailers, including Amazon. This device is clearly meant to take on the iPhone SE in the $400 range, although it's unclear as to what will be the winner between the two. Here's a quick look at the specs and features of the new Android-powered device.

Display

The Galaxy A51 has a 6.5-inch display surrounded by thin bezels on all sides. It has a hole punch at the center to house a selfie camera. The display might be bigger than the 4.7-inch LCD screen on the iPhone SE, but at least it doesn't have those huge bezels at the top and bottom.

Cameras

The Galaxy A51 offers four rear cameras for the same price the iPhone SE charges for one. This device has a 48MP main sensor, a 12MP Ultra wide camera perfect for those panoramic and group shots, a 5MP depth camera for use in portrait mode, and a 5MP macro camera for those close-ups.

Battery

The Galaxy A51's 4,000 mAh battery puts the 2020 iPhone SE's 1,821 mAh battery to shame. Samsung didn't say just how long the battery will last, but it did say that it will have fast-charging features via the supplied charger.

Innards

The Galaxy A51 is powered by an Exynos 9611 SoC which, according to Ars Technica, is a 10nm chipset that has four 2.3GHz Cortex-A73 cores and four 1.7 GHz Cortex-A53 cores. This might not be as fast or as powerful as the A13 Bionic inside the 2020 iPhone SE, but it could be comparable to the Snapdragon 835 that powered flagships in 2017.

While the SoC inside the Galaxy A51 isn't the fastest, Samsung said it is backed by 4GB of RAM, which is good enough for a midrange phone. It also comes with 128G of storage, expandable via use of a microSD card.
