Samsung Galaxy S3 ?Release Date? Kicked Off With 5 Features ?No Other Phone Has? And Red Carpet Launch Party
Samsung's Galaxy S3, the Korea-based company's flagship smartphone for 2012, was finally unveiled after much anticipation at a recent launch event on June 20. Although the handset's release date had been delayed, Samsung has decided to reveal some of the features that make its newest smartphone unique from competitors.
Fans and critics alike expected to hear about tech specs and the implementation of Ice Cream Sandwich, or Android 4.0. However, Chief Marketing Officer Todd Pendleton and Chief Product Officer Kevin Packingham described five features that no other phone has, according to PCMag. And, surprisingly enough, the ICS operating system was left unmentioned.
One of these features included the All Share GroupCast, which allows users to easily share documents for collaboration. ShareShot makes it convenient to automatically share photos at any event, just as the name implies. S Beam, similar to the Bump app available for iOS, lets Galaxy S3 owners transfer content between devices by tapping the smartphones back to back. The SmartStay feature knows when the device's screen is being viewed, so it doesn't dim the screen. Pop Up Play gives users the ability to email or text on top of a running HD video.
These certainly are interesting features, and Samsung succeeded in bringing something unpredictable to the long-awaited launch event. However, the first three unique features are only useful for those who know others that also own a Galaxy S3. This could be part of Samsung's plan to push out more devices, but with more than nine million preorders secured before launch the company doesn't have to fret.
In the press release announcing the product's launch, Samsung seemed to discuss everything but the Galaxy S3 itself. It seems as if the company is working on putting together a revamped brand for its new device, marking it with a trendy campaign that appeals to the masses rather than just tech enthusiasts and shoppers browsing for a new phone. The launch event, which had taken place in New York City, was described as a red carpet gathering featuring some heavy names in the showbiz industry. Actress Ashley Greene, made famous after appearing in Twilight films among others, hosted the launch party. Dubstep sensation Skrillex performed to celebrate the Galaxy S3 release at Skylight Studios in the trendy SoHo district, as the press write-up says.
As for the tech specs, PCMag reports that the screen contains a 4.8 inch Super-AMOLED display with 1,280 by 720 resolution. The exterior features metallic light blue or white case, and is based on a 1.5-GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor. Unlike most other Ice Cream Sandwich devices, the Galaxy S3 features one physical Home button, which is an interesting addition.
Due to high demand, the anticipated smartphone's release date for AT&T has been delayed to June 28, except for customers who have pre-ordered the 16 GB version. T-Mobile has also pushed back their availability date to June 29, and Canadian buyers can purchase the phone on June 27th, according to Motoring Crunch. However, soon enough the phone will be the most widely-available device across carriers, launching on AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile, and U.S. Cellular.
