Samsung Galaxy S8 Release Date Rumors: Flagship Could Feature Infinity Display, Iris Scanner
Features for Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S8 smartphone will include an “infinity display” and an iris scanner, according to a report from The Guardian. The phone is expected to come in 5-inch and 6-inch models. While the S8’s display will still feature the same curved edges found on past Samsung phones, the scale of the screen will be much larger.
“The so-called “infinity display” will cover the majority of the front of the device, with very little body on the top and bottom of the screen not dedicated to the display,” The Guardian said. “Two sources said there wasn’t even room to put a logo or brand name on the front of the device.”
According to Forbes, a source told the publication that Qualcomm's new chip won’t be available in mass quantities until after the Galaxy S8 is on the market, possibly by April 14.
Per The Guardian, secondary features are expected to include a fingerprint scanner on the phone’s backside, an iris biometric scanner and a traditional 3.5mm headphone jack. The phone will also potentially sport 64GB of internal storage and a USB-C port for charging and data transfer.
For Samsung, the Galaxy S8 hopes to be a way to turn the page on the disastrous launch of the Galaxy Note 7. The smartphone, which was plagued by reports of exploding batteries, caused a drop in smartphone sales for Samsung.
Upcoming competition in the smartphone market also ensures that the Galaxy S8 will enter a more crowded field. Samsung has declined to showcase the phone at next month’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona ahead of a slated April launch, which is expected to shift much of the event’s attention to LG’s upcoming G6 Android smartphone. In the premium smartphone space, the S8 will also go up against competitors like Apple’s iPhone 7 and Google’s own Pixel smartphone.
