KEY POINTS

  • Samsung and AMD to release new GPU next year
  • New GPU likely to be integrated with Exynos SoC
  • New GPU will account for better phone graphics

Mobile phones have their share of components to help deliver good graphics. Samsung has been busy focusing on its cameras but their chipset could use a boost. The company did partner with AMD as early as last year but nothing more than promises were made. Now, it appears both companies are buckling down to work and deliver results in upcoming phones starting next year.

When their partnership was announced, most knew that Samsung would likely license AMD's Radeon Graphics technology for use alongside its Exynos chips. As of this writing, that has yet to be seen although current benchmarks point to Samsung flagships coming armed with these yet to be named chips, Slash Gear reported.

It will be interesting how these unnamed chips will perform. Most phones use ARM chips these days but users still experience some lag on occasion. Among the familiar names, most may have heard include the ARM "vanilla" Mali GPU and Qualcomm's Adreno GPU. These are components that most don't pay much attention to, the focus of which is on the main SoC. This is because these GPUs are automatically attached to the CPUs.

With only two familiar names each time specs of phones are mentioned, Samsung could change that starting next year. It is long overdue and the Exynos chips will finally show something different for folks who want a smooth-operating handset. AMD's Radeon IP may be familiar to desktop graphics. They are custom-made for phones, giving mobile phone users something to look forward to by 2021, Sam Mobile reported.

And if the benchmark tests hold up, the next Samsung phones should be something to watch. The listing shows an AMD RDNA architecture, much better than the Qualcomm Adreno 650. This is the same one used on the Snapdragon 865, the one at the top right now.

It would be a good boost for Samsung who has been notorious for lagging in some components. This could come alongside a rumored Exynos 1000, something that could also be the industry's first 5nm chip.

Samsung seems a lot planned. In a previous post, they are planning to deliver a Galaxy Fold 2 successor that will be priced lower. The GPU could boost the performance of that display. And as most know, there are current issues such as the green tinting issue plaguing the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra.
