Police in San Antonio, Texas, have arrested a second suspect in a shooting and robbery at a local mall, law enforcement officials said late Sunday. The incident at the Rolling Oaks Mall in the day left one man dead.
The shooting took place Sunday afternoon when two men robbed the Kay Jewelers store at the mall. A man tried to stop the two robbers but was fatally shot by one of the suspects. Another man, who carried a licensed concealed handgun, shot at that robber, leaving him injured. The suspect was taken to a hospital and is reported to be in critical condition.
The second suspect then fled the scene after opening fire and wounding two other people, according to police.
“What we have here is a robbery gone really, really bad,” San Antonio police Chief William McManus told reporters. “It’s absolutely senseless. Absolutely senseless. ... a good Samaritan was killed trying to intervene in a crime to help the victim.”
The injured victims were taken to a local hospital along with a woman who complained of chest pain and a pregnant woman who went into labor, according to reports. Their condition remained unknown.
San Antonio Mayor Ivy R. Taylor said, in a statement posted on Facebook: “Today’s deadly shooting at Rolling Oaks Mall is a tragedy for everyone involved and all of us affected.”
Following the shooting, the mall, located in northeastern San Antonio, went into a lockdown and people inside the mall were reportedly told to take shelter where they were as law enforcement officials carried out a search for the second robber. McManus said the people in the mall were safe.
According to the San Antonio police, the robbery was likely related to another one that took place at the South Park Mall in the city on Friday.
