San Jose UPS Hostage Situation: 1 Suspect Dead, Truck Driver Safe
The Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office announced late Thursday that a UPS truck driver was safe after he was taken hostage by two suspects. Local media reported that one suspect was shot dead while the other was taken into custody.
The two suspects, one was identified as Mark Morasky, stole a UPS truck and held the driver hostage as they attempted to flea authorites in San Jose, California, Thursday afternoon. Authorities at the scene attempted to pull over the truck but the incident resulted in a standoff. During the pursuit, the suspect, fired shots in deputies' direction and at least one vehicle was hit.
A female suspect was in custody, but her medical condition was unclear, local media reports said.
The Mercury News of San Jose reported the confrontation with police played out near the headquarters of major internet companies, such as eBay, Google and PayPal.
After the standoff ended, the delivery driver was released unharmed.
One of the suspect's friends told Fox 2 that Morasky was suicidal and "was only going to hurt himself." His friends reportedly said they were on the phone with him during the standoff and talked him into surrendering. They also said Morasky was prepared to go to jail before he was shot.
Dramatic video of the incident showed the moment the male suspect exited the UPS truck with a shot gun in hand and fled through a parking lot on foot. Aerial footage also caught a female suspect walking with her hands up toward deputies after exiting the truck.
