  • Sarah Ferguson said Queen Elizabeth II has been more of a mother to her than her own late mom
  • The Duchess of York praised the Queen for being so modern, flexible, understanding and forgiving
  • Ferguson said she felt lost and deeply insecure before she met her "lovely" ex-husband Prince Andrew

Sarah Ferguson opened up about her relationship with Queen Elizabeth II in a new interview.

On Monday, the Duchess of York appeared on the "Tea With Twiggy" podcast, where she gushed over the 95-year-old monarch. According to Ferguson, the Queen is her "greatest mentor" and the person who believed in her even after she and Prince Andrew divorced in 1996.

"I think to myself that honestly, my mother-in-law has been more of a mother to me than my mother," Ferguson said. "[The Queen has] never faltered."

Her closeness with the Queen stems partly from her strained relationship with her own mother, Susan Barrantes, who divorced her dad, Ronald Ferguson, in 1974 when the duchess was a child, according to Us Weekly. Her mother left their family and moved to Argentina with her new husband, Héctor Barrantes. She died in a car crash in 1998.

Ferguson also praised Queen Elizabeth for her continued guidance and pointed out some of the qualities of the monarch that she admired most.

"I absolutely admire the incredible way Her Majesty is so modern. And how flexible, and how understanding, and how forgiving and how generous," the author shared. "And kind. I absolutely think there is no greater mentor. The consistency of Her Majesty has been a great honor. A huge honor. Makes me want to cry."

Aside from maintaining a good relationship with her mother-in-law, Ferguson has also remained amicable with her ex-husband as they co-parent their daughters Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie following their split. In the interview, she recounted how her royal ex changed her life.

"I lost my way. I became deeply insecure [after my mom’s passing]," Ferguson shared. "I suppose it wasn’t until my lovely ex-husband, lovely Andrew, that [I found my voice]. He always believes in me."

Earlier this month, Ferguson and Prince Andrew were spotted paying a visit to Queen Elizabeth at Balmoral Castle in Scotland. Her Majesty usually stays in her Scottish estate for the summer.

Prince Andrew was seen driving a Range Rover with a man on the passenger's seat. Ferguson was seated in the backseat of the vehicle while they drove around the Scottish estate.

The sighting came just one day after Virginia Giuffre filed a lawsuit against the Duke of York in federal court in New York alleging that he forced her to have sex with him three times between 1999 and 2002. Giuffre, an alleged victim of Jeffrey Epstein, said she was under 18 years old when the incident happened.
