Former porn star Sasha Grey has found that sexual harassment and abuse are more rampant in Hollywood than in the adult film industry.
In an interview with The Daily Beast, the “Entourage” actress, 32, discussed several topics, including her new talk show “Grey Area,” acting career and the differences between her previous profession and show business. When asked which industry she found to be worse when it comes to sexual abuse, she said, “Hollywood. Can’t lie.”
“I had far worse experiences in terms of sexual harassment there than I ever did in the adult industry,” Grey explained. “In the adult industry, I feel like the majority of the negative things I experienced were more ageism-related and manipulating me into thinking I was worth less than I was financially—as salespeople do.”
Grey revealed that she has experienced harassment in Hollywood numerous times “in totally uncalled-for moments.” She said that the offenders were mostly producers and agents.
Her interview also touched on former porn star Mia Khalifa, who has been vocal about her issues with the adult industry and claimed to have received only $12,000 for all the videos she made.
When asked about the money she earned from adult content, Grey shared that she “never got into the industry for money.” However, after noticing how popular she became in and out of the adult industry, she began looking at things from a businessperson’s perspective.
“I thought, OK, art and business should and could co-exist, especially when I’m putting myself on the line. During my short but intense career, I started putting my focus into doing my own thing, directing and producing my own stuff,” Grey added.
She explained that her first and last company failed, which was why she decided to move on.
Grey said that instead of money, her driving force was to “challenge the stereotypes of what is acceptable in society regarding women’s sexuality and female sexuality—although it went beyond whether you identify as a female or not.”
The actress also hoped that with her stint in the adult industry, she could help people “be self-empowered and take control of their own voice.”
Grey's live talk show, “Grey Area,” which she co-hosts with Korean battle rapper Dumbfoundead, debuted on new videogame network VENN on Friday, Aug. 7.
